Dessert Queen: Identity

Dessert Queen is a Brisbane catering business that specialises in creating gourmet cakes with painstaking attention to craft and flavour.

To accentuate this subtle craft, I chose to avoid the curly fonts, arabesques and cute illustrations that characterise this sector, and instead stripped it back to a crafted geometric mark. With its subtle gradients it is more reminiscent of abstract sculpture than sweet shops. The mark is complemented by the colours of chocolate, cream, and strawberry to create a warmer tone and evoke the sensual joy of eating great food.

This geometric mark is accompanied by a contemporary Didot-inspired typeface. While retaining the elegance of the original, this reinterpretation has a more subtle stroke contrast that makes it easier to reverse out at small sizes. The text can be completely separated from the mark as long as they both appear on the same piece.

This identity concept was created while completing work experience at LiveWorm Studios.

Lismore Regional Gallery: Identity

Lismore Regional Gallery is defined by the communities it serves and the work it presents. This identity system must walk the line between representing the values of LRG and allowing the artists' work and values to speak for themselves.

The icon explicitly charts the geographical connections between the communities it serves by simply linking them with lines. The logo is quite abstract, and and it is hoped that it will stimulate conversation and become iconic within the Northern Rivers community. This icon by itself can easily be reinterpreted into different media such as print, animation, sculpture, architecture, neon signage, jewellery, etc.

Rather than a rigid colour palette, a flexible approach to colour was suggested where the “identity” simply samples colour directly from the work being shown.

Nadine Joyce Refuge: Identity

The Nadine Joyce Refuge provides live-in accommodation for teenage mothers. It is a place where girls are able to continue their education and learn practical life skills with a strong focus on developing parenting skills.

The Nadine Joyce Refuge is named after the Grandmother of the founder. There is a strong tradition of quilting in their family, and I felt that this would be a strong symbol for the refuge. Not only does it evoke a feeling of safety and "home", but it also symbolises parenthood and family continuity. The logo and graphical elements are all based on the 9 patch quilt block.

In addition to quilting the logo also suggests a shield for education and a ribbon to express solidarity with other women's issues like breast cancer. The handwriting accompanying the logo is the actual signature of Nadine Joyce.

Colours, text and photographic style keep the identity contemporary and relevant despite the conservative connotations of quilting. The identity also encourages the use of photographic imagery that doesn't devalue clients, but shows them as individuals in control of their own destinies.
